Assessing Transportation Policy Using an Activity-based Microsimulation Model of Travel Demand

چکیده

Travel demand models have been providing decision-support for transportation infrastructure planning over the past half-century. However, with limited opportunities for new highway and transit infrastructure in congested areas, “demand-oriented” policy measures (e.g. travel demand management), which allow for more efficient usage of existing road and transit capacity, require improved methods of analysis. This paper presents a new operational prototype microsimulation model of travel and activity scheduling for household agents (TASHA) that provides more precise model outputs than current state-of-practice models, with little increase in the supporting data requirements. It is argued that the model significantly improves our ability to analyze demand oriented policy measures. This paper uses several example transportation policy problems in Toronto to demonstrate the potential benefits of the TASHA modelling approach over current methods.

Anticipating Welfare Impacts via Travel Demand Forecasting Models: Comparison of Aggregate and Activity-Based Approaches for the Austin, Texas Region

A great disparity exists between the direction of travel demand forecasting by researchers, and the travel demand models used by transportation planning organizations. Activity-based models of travel demand have become increasingly studied in the academic realm and significant advances have been made in recent years. However, travel demand forecasting tools used in practice have lagged behind, ...

Application of Discrete 3-level Nested Logit Model in Travel Demand Forecasting as an Alternative to Traditional 4-Step Model

This paper aims to introduce a new modelling approach that represents departure time, destination and travel mode choice under a unified framework. Through it, it is possible to overcome shortages of the traditional 4-step model associated with the lack of introducing actual travellers’ behaviours. This objective can be achieved through adopting discrete 3-level Nested Logit model that represen...

Making Household Microsimulation of Travel and Activities Accessible to Planners

There is a large gap between the aggregate, trip-based models used by transportation planning agencies and the activity-based, microsimulation methods being espoused by those at the forefront of research. The modeling environment presented here aims to bridge this gap by providing a palatable way for planning agencies to move towards advanced methods. Three components to bridging the gap are em...

Influencing Mechanism Analysis of Holiday Activity–Travel Patterns on Transportation Energy Consumption and Emissions in China

Energy shortage and atmospheric pollution problems are getting more serious in China, and transportation is the main source of energy consumption, pollutants, and carbon emissions. This study combined the activity-based analysis method with emission models, and investigated the influence mechanism of people’s activity travel scheduling on transportation energy consumption and emissions on holid...

Spatial Behavior in Transportation Modeling and Planning

The recent policy discussions about information technology in transport and trafficdemand management have increased the interest in activity-based approaches to the analysis oftravel behaviour, in particular in the modelling of household activity scheduling which is at thecore of many of the required changes in travel behaviour. The paper is a state-of-the-art reviewof conceptua...
